Deep in the Mgoun Valley, the small town of Kalaat M'Gouna has built its identity around a single flower: the Damask rose.
Between the Dadès and Todra valleys, the small town of Kalaat M'Gouna sits at the centre of what's known across Morocco as the Rose Valley — a stretch of the Mgoun Valley where Damask roses have been cultivated for generations.
A cooperative open all year
At a local rose water cooperative, visitors can see how the flowers are distilled into rose water and rose-based products, with a tasting included. The cooperative runs year-round, so a visit fits naturally into any itinerary through the Dadès Valley.
When the roses actually bloom
The roses themselves flower in spring, with the blooming season concentrated in April and May — the best time to see, and smell, the valley at its most fragrant. Outside these months, the cooperative's production and tasting experience continues as usual.
A natural stop on the Route of the Kasbahs
Kalaat M'Gouna sits directly on the road between the Dadès Gorges and the Todra Gorges, making it an easy, worthwhile stop on almost any circuit through the valley.
