Merzouga sits at the foot of Erg Chebbi, the dune field that most travellers picture when they imagine the Moroccan Sahara. A ninety-minute camel trek carries you into the dunes in time for sunset, followed by a night at a desert bivouac — dinner, Berber drumming and a sky full of stars.
The approach usually runs through Rissani, the historic artisan capital of the south, known for its forges, silversmiths, potters and hand-forged sickle-makers — a fitting last stop before the dunes themselves.
