Aït Ben Haddou

A UNESCO World Heritage ksar of red-earth kasbahs on the ancient caravan route, famous as a filming location for Gladiator and Game of Thrones.

Rising from the red earth on the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech, Aït Ben Haddou is Morocco's most celebrated ksar — a fortified cluster of kasbahs built from rammed earth and straw, largely unchanged in silhouette for centuries.

It is classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, recognised as an outstanding example of traditional pre-Saharan earthen architecture. Its dramatic towers have also made it one of the most filmed locations in North Africa, appearing on screen in Gladiator and Game of Thrones.

A visit typically lasts around ninety minutes, wandering the narrow lanes up to the old granary at the top for views back across the valley — best in the soft light of early morning or late afternoon.
