Drâa-Tafilalet, near M’Hamid El Ghizlane

Erg Chegaga

Morocco's largest and wildest dune sea — dunes up to 300 metres high beyond M'Hamid, reached by 4x4 piste, far from the crowds of Merzouga.

Beyond M'Hamid El Ghizlane, where the paved road finally ends, a 4x4 piste crosses the reg to Erg Chegaga — Morocco's largest and wildest expanse of sand, with dunes rising as high as 300 metres.

Because it takes longer to reach than the more famous Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, Chegaga stays quieter: a genuine ‘sea of sand’ where sunset camel treks and nights at a desert bivouac feel remote in a way few other places in Morocco do. It's also the starting point for the historic Paris-Dakar piste that continues on toward dry Lake Iriqui and Foum Zguid.
